Death Note - American Movie
Okay, so for a long time now I've been hearing that the U.S. will be filming a live-action remake of the Death Note franchise.
And for an equally long time I never believed it.
But apparently, a number of more reliable sources have confirmed that a Death Note American-made movie is in the works.
However, all the rumors that Zac Effron was asked to play or has been cast to play Light Yagami are fake. Zac Effron is NOT in consideration for the role.

Now while a lot of people are pessimistic about this American remake, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest not to judge it just yet. Yes, remakes and dubs never seem as good as the originals, although I believe this is in part an illusion...
To be honest, the crazy out-there things that are said and done by anime characters partly sound appealing and realistic because we can't understand them. lol. Once things like "I'll take a chip and eat it" make it to English (or once you see it done in a cultural-senario that is familiar to you), it loses the apparent realism/drama and just looks silly.
But this isn't necessarily the fault of the American voice actors (or American actors). Even were the same thing to be said in the same tone in an English dub quote as in the Japanese original quote, the English version will inherently sound odd simply because once you hear it in your native tongue, you get that moment of ".....wait a second, no one would ever say that like that in real life."
Acting in a foreign language can actually sound better because if there is a quote that "no one would ever say like that," you wouldn't know the difference. lol.
Take the Dragonball Z live-action American movie remake (that is coming soon) for example. So many people were lamenting the remake, saying the fight scene acting looks "stupid and unrealistic."
My response: "When you say this do you remember the original Japanese fight scene acting?"
Now, I'm not bashing DBZ. It was my favorite show growing up. But we all remember the show that brought us such memorable lines as "IT'S OVER 9000! WHAT?!" wasn't exactly Oscar material to start with. lol. However, the silliness of the lines and senarios are greatly accentuated when you see it in a language or culture that is familiar to you.
So while I doubt the American remake will be as comfortable for us to view as the original, I'd give it a chance none-the-less.

Also, on the topic of Zac Effron playing Light (which he is actually NOT doing, but which I'd still like to talk about, lol)...
I might just be an optimistic person, but I actually don't think that would be that bad.
And before you throw cans at me, let me explain myself. I am not a Zac Effron fan in any way (I don't like or dislike the guy), but this is my defense of him as Light...
1) We know Zac Effron has experience at playing some randomly good-looking, popular (not suspicious in anyway) high school dude.
2) He looks identical to Light Yagami (Hey, I give it some points )
3) Most Death Note fans hate Light = Most Death Note fans hate Effron It's so perfect.
4) Light Imagay looks like a yaoi character = Effron could be a yaoi character. XD
5) And really, Light only has like 2 emotions in the show anyway.
Light's 2 Emotions: or
If Zac can just nail "happy innocent" and "crazy maniac" then he's probably good to go.

I really agree with the first past of your comment. Well said! Also, I'm getting tired of people bashing movies that didn't even started to be made, just because it's the cool thing nowadays.
The fans freak out and complain that the coming anime will ruin the credibility of the manga.
then

I have to admit, it's ironic in a way: It's likely that the American studios doing the remake will make it intended for 14 year olds (since they know American adults typically wouldn't watch a film like that ). Then all the 14 year olds (which honestly make up the majority of Death Note fans) will get pissed that the movie was made for 14 year olds like them rather than being "high brow."
"Lyke omg Debbie, they totes ruined 'take a chip and eat it' it sounded so STUPID not like the REAL 'take a chip and eat it.'"
(LMAO. Don't be offended all the 14 year old Death Note fans out there. I'm just kidding. XD)
Oh well. I'll give the movie a try before judging it.
I agree with you, the japanese DN movies weren't even as good as the fandom says so The camaramen work was horrible, Ryuk didn't look real and sometimes Ken'ichi Matsuyama made L look like a retarded. And hey, don't get me wrong, I think he was a nice actor for the role and made an adorable L! But sometimes... Remember in the last movie, when he was tipyng on the computer?
I think the american cinema can make great produtions, and I'm quite excited for this one. 8D DN has a good plot, and with a good set of actors, directors, artists (for the CG shinigamis), cameramen, etc, it may turn out to be a sucess.
And c'mon, if it was for the "purists", we wouldn't have adaptations of anything... Watchmen, Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings and all those movies the geeks () love wouldn't even exist.
LOL, yeah. I think the acting in the movie was good. But I agree about the camera quality. D8
I noticed that the film grain looked a little "low budget." It kind of had that 70s film look.
And the set reminded me of Dr. Evil's Layer from Austin Power. LMAO. I just figured the acting and story made up for it, but yeah. Ryuk looked like a made-for-tv animated cartoon placed in a 3D environment.
Oh those purists.
lol. Oh well. I enjoy anything Death Note, no matter how bad it is. So I'm sure I'll be seeing that remake. XD

These rumors where started based on how creepily similar Zac Effron and Light Yagami look.
